Client Stories

To help you understand the kind of challenges North Fulton families face, here are profiles of situations where NFCC has been able to help. The situations are real but the names have been changed to protect the family's confidentiality.

Mary was very excited when she learned she was pregnant. She had saved what she thought would be enough to get her over her anticipated maternity leave. Mary had to leave work early when it was discovered she was carrying twins. The babies were born prematurely and had many health problems. A month after she brought them home, one of the babies died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Mary is fearful about leaving the other twin in day care but knows she must return to work soon. NFCC helped her with rent to give her more time to adjust to all that has happened.

Michelle is a single mother of two who lives and works in Roswell. Michelle comes to NFCC occasionally for food and clothing, but she usually has just enough income to pay her bills. While driving on Georgia 400 a wheel of her old car came off causing severe damage to the car. Luckily, no one was injured. It took all Michelle had set aside for the rent to repair the car, without which she could not get to work. NFCC helped Michelle with the rent.

Nancy has a child who is disabled and receives Supplemental Social Security based on her low income. Nancy received three paychecks instead of two which caused her SSI income to be reduced. Nancy's expenses had not changed. Nancy's income had not changed. It was just the way the calendar fell that particular month. Without NFCC's help with the rent, an eviction notice would have been given to Nancy.

David has come to NFCC for help over the last year following a fall at the airport that injured his back and left him unable to work. Although all agree David is injured, his case is in court to determine who is responsible. Meanwhile, David has no income. His Alpharetta landlord has understood but the utility bills continue. NFCC has helped with utility bills and medicine to try to keep him stable while his case navigates the judicial system.

Sandra works in a local hotel and has two young children. Her husband, Miguel, broke his ankle and required surgery. Infection set in and a second surgery was necessary. He hopes to be released to return to work soon. As a day laborer, Miguel had no medical insurance and they have struggled to pay the bills. NFCC has been able to assist with rent and food over these difficult months.

Elliot lives with his 75 year old mother in Roswell and works in construction. His mother needed assistance, since nearly all of her Social Security income has to pay for the many medicines that she needs. Elliot recently hurt his shoulder and was out of work for a month. NFCC helped them with their rent.

Mary, Michelle, Nancy, David, Sandra and Elliot all say "Thank You" to those who support NFCC and make good things happen.
